Four in a Row — Strategy

Notation
To talk about a position you need names for the cells. The club uses chess-like notation.
- Columns are letters from left to right: a, b, c, d, e, f, g. Wider boards continue with h, i, j.
- Rows are numbers from the bottom up: the lowest row is 1, the top row of the classic board is 6.
A cell is named by its column letter and row number: d1 is the middle of
the bottom row, a6 is the top-left corner.
A move in Four in a Row is only a column: gravity picks the row, and the
disc falls to the lowest free cell. That is why a move in the game record at
the table is a single letter: 7. ● d — the seventh disc was dropped into
column d. A pop in PopOut is written with a ^ sign: ^c — a disc was
popped out of the bottom row of column c.
In these articles cells are named in full — e3, c4 — because we talk
about where the disc ends up, not only where it was dropped.
